Great essay question. Could you handle it?

Compare and contrast your interpretation of 'The Road Not Taken' with Colonel Slades speech from the film 'Scent of a Woman.'

Admit Your Mistakes

In a few posts and on the Kijiji ads I have used some big words and in a jocular (look it up) manner asked you to 'look it up!'   This is actually a mistake by good tutors and teachers.  Before you run to the dictionary (do they still exist?) or google, try to use your intuition from the context of the sentence or paragraph. This can help you 'suss out' the meaning of the word. Also, stopping every time you cannot fathom a word stifles your interest in whatever you are reading. A good author doesn't mind if you miss or skip a few words. Simply plod on!

Algebra

Sooo Confusing!!!!!!!!!
Ever wonder why you as a student do well in maths until you hit Algebra???  It is simply because algebra is an abstract (look it up) concept. Has a teacher ever clearly explained to you why 'x' can all of the sudden become a numerical  value???  X is a letter and then in grade 9 it morphs into a number. Picasso was a genius at algebra. However, there is a silver lining if you are actually good at maths, chemistry and physics. It means you have good problem-solving analytical skills. Which, if you think it through, should make literature and fathoming difficult poetry a snap! Why???

Reading, not the one in England

A tutor can help you with your reading! Unmotivated to read the mandatory literature or even a chapter in your textbook?  Do you find the actual exercise of reading difficult or simply mundane. (look it up)  How would you rate yourself as a reader if you were obligated to read a passage from a book? Do you still need to use your finger to underline the sentences? Do big words hinder the entire exercise??  Are the letters jumbled or backward or floating all over the place in your mind??   All these things can be addressed with a properly trained tutor.

It's amazing to me that today's students aren't better readers considering the amount of time consumed by text messaging. Perhaps if teachers and profs texted their lessons and lectures students would excel!

We don't need to know how to read to actually survive. No one ever died because they can't read. Therefore it is not an innate natural skill. Naturally running from Cujo is a survival skill. Reading is not. Nelson Rockefeller, Vice President of the United States could not read at all. He simply used other skills to overcome that deficiency.

Learned Helplessness

Are you easily frustrated with your lessons and results?? Have a tendency to give up or procrastinate? Blame the teacher, professor or others for your lack of motivation or success? A good tutor can help build self-esteem and make a subject or school itself more interesting.

Learning is a process not a product. When you received the results from your last assignment did the paper look like this?

or this

A good tutor will revise your work before submission. A great teacher will highlight the strength's and weaknesses of your ideas and writing skills.

Three types of tutors oops alliteration

There are four types of tutors:

One assists with subjects you are having difficulty in and/or motivates you to excel in an area where your aptitude and interest is/are already quite high. I would probably caution that the previous sentence is too long. I waffled on the is or are!!! Which one is correct??

Another type of tutelage involves increasing your academic awareness. Meta cognition is perhaps somewhat daunting (look that word up) but simply involves 'knowing about knowing' and in the end discovering  'knowing about knowing about knowing.'

Do you use your own intuition or run to 'google?'  Yes the inverted comma is actually in the correct place!!This tutor provides research tips, examination prep, writing skills, essay/ cv/ and cover letter revision. Preparation for scholarships,  bursaries, interviews and etiquette. These are linked. But can you link two paragraphs together smoothly in an essay? Is it possible for you to write an essay, thesis statement or argument without using the first person?? That means 'I' btw!!!

The third tutor simply writes all your papers for you and even does the research, leaving you free to play on your iPhone, go to dance or hockey practice. BAD tutor!!!!

The fourth is a combination of all the above.

Linking Paragraphs

Do you know how to write a proper thesis statement or argument without using the 'first person?' In a good essay, which paragraph ...
